International Rescue Committee
The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. In more than 40 countries and in 26 U.S. cities, our dedicated teams provide clean water, shelter, health care, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.
I have volunteered with this organization, helping refugees establish their new lives in their adopted country, and the empowerment aspect of the support IRC provides is something I really like. I am pleased to support the IRC’s work.
Black Girls Code
Black Girls Code’s mission is to increase the number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology. To provide African-American youth with the skills to occupy some of the 1.4 million computing job openings expected to be available in the U.S. by 2020, and to train 1 million girls by 2040.
This organization touches my heart in several ways. In my former career with one of the world’s tech giants, I saw firsthand the disproportionate number of women of color in the industry. Also, as a mother of two children who enjoy programming and who have been recipients of financial assistance that has enabled them to follow their coding dreams, I connect with the mission of this group on a personal level.
